UrbanARC \| Panel Discussion \| The 'Periphery' and the future of urbanisation	UrbanARC \| Panel Discussion \| The 'Periphery' and the future of urbanisation Urban ‘peripheries’, as sites of social, economic and political transitions are not just linked to delineated urban cores and restricted to edges of existing urban settlements, but also a conceptual lens to analyse new ‘edges’ of urbanity-rurality associated with emergent patterns of urbanization and industrialization in rural locations. In line with theorisations regarding geographies of global modernity posited in world systems theory and dependency theory, the ‘periphery’ also references relational geographies of development associated with the urban and the rural, given current imperatives for urbanization and industrialization. Moreover, ‘peripheries’ offer an important conceptual tool for displacing, questioning, expanding and ‘othering’ historically linear and territorially isolated analysis and theories of ‘D’evelopment. Conceptual frames based on the idea of ‘peripheries’ have allowed explorations of simultaneous processes of development and underdevelopment, accumulation and dispossession, conflict and collaboration. They have helped situate the ‘core’ into larger systemic frames of ecology, sustainability and crises. They have fostered dissent, critique and alternate imaginations of transformational trajectories. They have questioned the hegemonic boundaries of theory- building and allowed a place for ‘method’ to lead theory and for the marginal to become the foreground of research and analysis. This panel explores papers on emergent urban futures based on empirical experiences of ‘peripheries’ in India and other non- core locations. Papers may speak to the ‘periphery’ (1) as a site, (2) as a conceptual tool to unpack the edges of urbanity- rurality, and (3) as a positionality to question trajectories of spatial, social and economic transitions associated with a future that will be significantly urban. Particularly in the climate change discourse, it is highlighted that increased environmental stress (exacerbated by anthropogenic climate change) will dramatically increase the number of people migrating, thereby potentially destabilizing regional and global security. From a climate change perspective, we find that well-being, livelihood strategies, vulnerability reduction and peripheral locations dominate the research landscape on migration in the urban context. Are their additional relational perspectives, and additional frames of enquiry on migration being pursued, which can inform policy development for climate adaptation, as well as urban development in the Global South? URBAN LABS THE FILM	Urban Labs The Film Published on 21 Jun 2017 In 2016 the Netherlands Creative Industries Fund joined hands with UN Habitat Urban Labs. In 5 countries on 4 continents groups of architects, planners and urbanists analyzed the rapid urbanization and together with local experts they developed plans to tackle this or to streamline it. The design teams developed tailor made plans and created a solid foundation for the implementation of the solutions just for the locations. MEDIAHQ has ben following the process for over a year, filmed on the locations with the design teams and presented the film at the HABITAT III conference in Quito in October 2016. It is a perfect showcase of solution oriented Dutch urban planning. Research by design to contribute to a safe, just and sustainable world. It's mostly slums, conflict or at best, wildlife.One day, Mutua Matheka went up to the rooftop of one of the taller buildings in Nairobi and saw the city, from a perspective new even to him. He realised Nairobi is actually beautiful. This moment changed everything. Mutua saw the distortion of what is presented to the world versus what is. He set out to photograph his city, in order to show the beauty he saw in it and, to balance the imagery that introduces the world to Nairobi. Transforming Research into Practices and Policies	Transforming Research into Practices and Policies Urban Transformations held a side event at the recent Habitat III event in Quito, Ecuador, ‘Transforming research into practices and policies – dialogues on implementation and evaluation of the New Urban Agenda‘. The discussions brought together local governments, community activists and academics from Brazil, South Africa and the United Kingdom to explore how comparative research can contribute to the realisation of the New Urban Agenda and the ways that learning can be effectively streamlined into decision making processes. The speakers included a number of researchers involved in various Urban Transformations projects, including Vanesa Castán Broto, Sophie Hadfield-Hill, Ramin Keivani and Cathy McIlwaine, as well as Beth Chitekwe-Biti (Slum Dwellers International), Cllr Parks Tau (Former Mayor of Johannesburg and now President of the United Cities and Local Governments) and Gabrielle Guimarães (Senior Adviser for Multilateral Cooperation at Rio de Janeiro City Hall). Among other conclusions, the participants highlighted the need for researchers to effectively bridge different institutional contexts to shape urban policy effectively, and the value of knowledge networks and partnerships in achieving this. Furthermore, given the uncertainty of urban futures, they also emphasised the need for adaptive and real-time policy processes alongside longer term visions and strategies.
