Kosovo's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Local Government, Mr. Slobodan Petrovic, and the Deputy Minister of Spatial Planning and Environment, Mr. Shpëtim Rudi attended a high profile World Habitat Day conference on cities and climate change. They were joined by the Country Director of the Swedish International Development Agency, Ms. Maria Melbing, the Head of UN-HABITAT-Kosovo, Ms. Krystyna Galezia, and representatives of various Kosovo municipalities and ministries, experts and professionals as well as civil society representatives.
In their speeches, several of them cited facts and data on the actual situation on the climate change and emphasizing cities as contributors to this phenomenon. The host, Ms. Galeiza, highlighted the work being done to assist Kosovo Municipalities on environmental issues related to urbanization, and reducing the urban environmental footprint through their strategic documents. The meeting focused on lessons learned from a study trip in Sweden last month (September).
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning, Mr. Arben Citaku, urged Kosovo Municipalities to draft their strategic development plans, and take into consideration the environmental issues including the energy efficiency measures in design and construction.
